Crocuses

Crocuses are a favorite, breaking winter's spell as they do, especially in areas where snow is replaced by mud and frigid is replaced only by cold. Unfortunately, they are a favorite of critters as well as people. Moles eat them, as do skunks. Squirrels dig them up, eat a few, and replant others in unexpected places.

Still, a few survive and bring hope to those who thought hope was lost. The first crocus is like the first robin, signaling a new season.
